Fortune 1000 Trains IT Employees

Cyber Security and Privacy Training

  • Headquarters: Washington
  • Industry: Energy
  • Product/Service: Power distribution
  • Size: Over 1 million residential customers
  • Penalty fines were being charged nationwide for non-compliance
  • Employees were procrastinating about going to training
  • An audit was impending
  • Reports of non-compliance could result in large liabilities for the organization
  • Run an incentivized, social competition throughout the IT group, for 3 months, without taking time out of their schedules
  • Deliver one weekly game per month @ 10 Qs delivered each day to their computers
  • Segment users in 3 groups: previously trained, untrained, and those who go to training once Ringorang program begins
  • Average loss of recall on the subject matter was reduced by 44%
  • Achieved 135% information retention score (100% retention + 35% increase)
  • 65% of “untrained” spontaneously went to training in first week of the competition
  • No significant difference in performance of trained vs. untrained
  • Following the program, the company had its first year with no notice of penalty from audit

Cyber Security and Privacy Training

The CIO insisted on stellar performance from their 200-employee IT group in their next round of audits on cybersecurity and customer privacy.

Challenges

NERC-CIP compliance on cybersecurity and customer information privacy presented complicated and notoriously dull training material for this energy company’s IT employees. Although the CIO mandated the training, there was a window of time in which employees could take it – which made for considerable procrastination. And a NERC audit was impending. Non-compliance fines could cost the company multiple millions of dollars, and needed to be avoided at all costs.

Requirements

The CIO contracted Ringorang® to make the subject matter compelling and to provide proof that 200 IT employees had learned and retained the information regardless of whether or not they went to training. The objectives were:

  1. Compel employees to take the training they were avoiding
  2. Deliver daily engagement with regulatory info for 3 months
  3. Ensure that the untrained employees test out equally with the trained employees

Solutions

NERC-CIP requirements have little bearing in the everyday routine of most IT employees. Therefore, keeping compliance requirements in front of employees with sufficient repetition to develop a habit was a key goal. A Ringorang challenge series was run that included prizing, team competition, accolades from the CIO, and a comprehensive curriculum. The curriculum consisted of learning objectives and elements reduced to over 150 Qs, delivered one Q at a time, 10 times a day throughout each contest week. By segmenting the groups, the data revealed performance comparisons among those who were trained previously, those who went to training only once Ringorang began, and those who received no training at all. The results were eye-opening.

Benefits

There was no significant difference in the performance among the three groups. Ringorang’s curriculum methodology successfully Topstacked the key learnings of NERC-CIP sufficiently so that participants were able to learn and take the test simultaneously, exhibiting proficiency without any previous training. Ringorang is formatted both to train from the ground up and to reinforce key learnings after training. There were key benefits from this project month across all trial participants, resulting in captured data on user’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes about efficiency and conservation behavior. Following are some of these benefits:

  • Average Loss of recall on the subject matter was reduced by 44%
  • Achieved 135% information retention score (100% retention + 35% increase)
  • 65% of “untrained” spontaneously went to training once Ringorang started
  • Following the program, the company had its first year with no notice of penalty from audit
